2022 Bioengineering Day

Bioengineering Day is an annual event celebrating UCSD's top-ranked bioengineering department and the students within it.

The theme for Bioengineering Day 2022 is “Bridging the Boundaries in Bioengineering.” The event aims to inform and illustrate how the bioengineering industry is multidisciplinary, borrowing talent and innovation from various individuals and their respective fields. We seek to spotlight how bioengineering finds collaborators from other engineering disciplines, the natural sciences, and all walks of life so that anyone may find a spot for themself. By illustrating how bioengineering bridges many disciplines of science and technology together, we hope to inspire students, of all backgrounds and fields, to choose opportunities to get involved in bioengineering. Through highlighting research for diverse communities, attendees will gain exposure to new perspectives to help them grow as students, professionals, and engineers.

KEYNOTE SPEAKER

 

Keynote Speaker 9:15 AM - 10:15 AM

The keynote speaker for this event will be Dr. Jay Rubinstein, MD, Ph.D., Professor of Otolaryngology and Bioengineering at the University of Washington. Dr. Rubinstein received his B.S. and M.S. in Engineering from Brown University before going on to receive his M.D./Ph.D. in Bioengineering from the University of Washington. He now both works as an otologic surgeon and conducts research in signal processing with cochlear implants.

Senior Design Poster Sessions:

Senior design projects are the capstone of a four-quarter course sequence that gives fourth and fifth-year students hands-on experience with engineering design for medical and biological applications. It is a critical component of the design and research sequence for upper-level bioengineering students. Poster Sessions are the central focus of Bioengineering Day, where these fourth and fifth-year students will present posters about their projects and give attendees to learn more about the diverse applications of bioengineering in the field and ask relevant questions.

 

STUDENT ORG PROJECT TEAMS

 

Student Org Project Teams:

There are many organizations outside of the Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES) that do bioengineering-related projects. Along with our poster sessions, Project Teams from these various student organizations will be showcasing the work that they've done over the past year. Many of these teams have members from a variety of majors, once again highlighting how bioengineering can be a career path for everyone.

 

NETWORKING LUNCH

 

Networking Lunch: 12:00 - 1:00 PM

Chat with representatives from a variety of companies in the bioengineering industry as well as bioengineering graduate students to discuss their work and their path to getting there. Hone your networking skills and make valuable connections while gaining insight and perspective into a bioengineering career path!

 

DEMONSTRATIONS

 

Industry and Graduate Student Demonstrations: 1:00 - 2:00 PM

The main purpose of the Industry and Graduate Student Demonstrations is to expose students, especially those in Bioengineering tracks, to industry careers and the graduate school paths that they can pursue after graduation.

 

QUIZBOWL

 

Quizbowl: 3:45 - 4:45 PM

A Bioengineering Day tradition, Quizbowl is a fun, team-based competitive trivia game reminiscent of Jeopardy (the television game show) where players go head-to-head and test their knowledge on a wide range of STEM-based subjects, from astronomy and psychology to chemistry and physics as well as non-STEM-based categories. Playoffs will occur starting in early April to determine the undergraduate champion, who will face off a team of graduate students at the event! Come and cheer on your favorite team and see who will emerge victorious.
