Describe your background
I'm originally from Knoxville, TN, and I completed my Bachelor's degree in Bioengineering: Biosystems at UCSD in 2024. My goal is to work in medical devices on products that directly translate to clinical improvements for patients!
Describe your area of research and/or your area of specialty
Medical devices, ultrasound, imaging, wearables, and clinical engineering.
Describe your involvement within the department and UC San Diego (were/are you involved in student orgs, recreation, certificate programs, internships, etc. outside of curricular requirements?)
During my undergraduate studies, I was an active member of the student BMES chapter (project team). As a Master's student, I was a teaching assistant for several classes including Senior Design. I also had an internship at Philips.
Have you received any outstanding mentorship or guidance during your time in the program that made an impact on your research and/or the trajectory of your career?
My PI Dr. Sheng Xu was an excellent research mentor. It was a privilege to work in his lab and get exposed to many different research projects with direct clinical impacts. Dr. Alyssa Taylor was my TA-ship advisor; she was an excellent mentor and support during my time at UCSD. I'm grateful to her for giving me the opportunity to work with students and grow as a professional!
What has been your favorite part about your graduate experience in the program?
The flexible course options, opportunities to work as a TA, and opportunities for mentorship from faculty and external industry.
Any thoughts or advice you'd like to share with prospective graduate students?
Make the most of your time and resources in the program, because 2 years goes by faster than you expect! Also, be intentional about your research and extracurriculars to set yourself up for success in your desired future field.
