Transfer Bioinformatics

Effective FALL 2014, Bioengineering: Bioinformatics is an "impacted" major.  Successful applicants must have completed substantial training at a community college or other  4-year institution with a high level of academic performance.  The required minimum of ninety quarter transfer units must include eighteen quarter units of calculus, twelve quarter units of calculus-based physics (including lab experience), ten quarter units of general chemistry (including lab experience), and the highest level of introductory computer programming language offered at the community college or other 4-year institution. 

The following courses (or their equivalents) are recommended preparation for all engineering transfer students.

  • Calculus I— for Science and Engineering (MATH 20A)
  • Calculus II— for Science and Engineering (MATH 20B)
  • Calculus and Analytic Geometry (MATH 20C)
  • Differential Equations (MATH 20D)
  • Linear Algebra (MATH 20F)
  • Complete calculus-based physics series with lab experience (PHYSICS 2A-B-C)
  • Chemistry 6A (included in a total of ten quarter-units of general chemistry with lab experience)
  • Highest level of introductory computer programming language course offered at the community college**

BIOENGINEERING: BIOINFORMATICS (BINF) TRANSFER STUDENTS FROM COMMUNITY COLLEGE OR OTHER 4-YEAR INSTITUTION
 

  1. BINF MAJOR “FLOWCHART”: Please review the “flowchart” of required courses to determine your progress in completion of those courses for your Bioengineering: Bioinformatics (BINF) major.  Just cross off the UCSD equivalent courses you’ve already completed at community college or other 4-year institution, and the “flowchart” will provide you with an accurate “snapshot” of your progress-to-date.

  2. CSE 11:If you haven’t completed an equivalent course to CSE11, Intro to Programming:  Java,  go online to http://cse.ucsd.edu/node/43  & complete the “CSE COURSE ADVISORY EXAM.”  Detailed instructions are provided, and after the 30-minute exam, you’ll receive a suggestion re: the CSE course in which you should enroll in fall quarter.

  3.  “HSS” BOXES ON “FLOWCHART”: The boxes along the bottom of the “flowchart” marked “HSS” refer to your college general education (GE) course requirements. Boxes are included to allow for completion of 10 GE courses (40 units); however, dependent upon which of the six colleges you are in, you may have to complete more than 10 courses. (Please contact your college advisor to obtain more detailed information.)

  4. IMPORTANT TO FOLLOW THE “FLOWCHART”: Hopefully you’ll have completed many of the required lower-division courses at your community college or other 4-year institution. 

  5. YOUR FIRST FALL QUARTER COURSE SCHEDULE: IF YOU HAVE COMPLETED THE LOWER-DIVISION REQUIRED COURSES, please enroll in CSE12, BIBC 102 and BICD 100.

  6. FLOWCHART”~ FRESHMAN YR-WTR & SP QTRS: Note CSE 12, Basic Data Structures and BILD 94, BINF Seminar are 2 courses that you may not have completed at community college or other 4-year institution. If you have already satisfied an equivalent to CSE 11, enroll in CSE 12 in your first fall quarter at UCSD. Note BILD 94 is not always offered; please consult with Bioengineering Student Affairs re: alternative course offerings.

  7. FLOWCHART”~ SOPHOMORE YR-WTR & SP QTRS: Note CHEM 140AB, Organic Chem I and II  may not have been offered at your community college. Enroll in these courses in fall and winter or spring quarters, if you have not already completed them.  Also, BILD 2, Multicellular Life and BILD 3, Organismic & Evolutionary Biology may not have been offered at your community college or other 4-year institution. Plan to complete these courses as soon as you can.

  8. IF YOU HAVE NOT COMPLETED THE REQUIRED LOWER-DIVISION  COURSES, PLEASE CONTACT A BENG ADVISOR RE: ADVICE ON YOUR FALL COURSES. Bioengineering Student Affairs is located on the Warren campus in Powell-Focht Bioengineering Hall, room 141 (on the 1st floor right next to the elevators!).   Our building is just a little west of the 2-story “Bear” sculpture made out of granite boulders!  You may ask departmental questions via the E-VAC beginning mid-June.
